Why does my urine smell like rotten eggs and look cloudy?

Sulphur-containing foods, supplements, and some medicines can change urine odour. Concentrated urine can make any smell more noticeable, while crystals, mucus, or discharge may create cloudiness. Burning, urgency, frequent urination, or lower abdominal discomfort can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back needs quicker assessment because infection can involve the kidneys. Smell and appearance are clues, not a diagnosis.

Think back to recent foods, supplements, medicines, reduced drinking, sweating, or illness. Drink normally if you have no fluid restriction, and watch whether the change settles. Keep track of pain, urgency, fever, discharge, and how long the change lasts. Arrange a urine assessment if the smell or cloudiness persists, recurs, or is accompanied by discomfort. Avoid taking antibiotics without advice.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, chills, vomiting, side or back pain, or feeling very unwell. Seek urgent help for confusion, inability to urinate, or blood with severe pain. Pregnancy and kidney disease are reasons to seek medical advice early when urinary changes occur.
