What does cloudy urine mean?

Urine may look cloudy after you have not had enough fluid, when minerals form crystals, or when mucus mixes with the sample. Vaginal discharge, semen, or cleaning products can also change what you see in the toilet. Cloudiness with burning, frequent urination, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong new smell can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the back or side raises concern for infection involving the kidneys. Cloudiness by itself cannot identify the cause.

Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether the appearance clears. Note the colour, smell, timing, pain, urgency, discharge, and any new medicines or supplements. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s treatment.
