My toenail is lifting off the nail bed

The detached portion may look white because air has entered beneath the nail. Tight shoes, a blow, repeated running pressure, nail fungus, or nail psoriasis can contribute. The separated part generally does not reattach; healthy nail grows forward from the base over time. Colour change, thickening, debris, tenderness, or separation in more than one nail helps a clinician narrow the cause.

Keep the toe clean and dry. Do not pull the nail away or place adhesive under it. If an edge catches, carefully trim only the loose portion with clean clippers, provided it is not painful or attached to skin. Wear roomy shoes and protect a tender area with a light dressing. Avoid polish and aggressive cleaning beneath the nail. A clinician can examine a clipping or skin sample if fungus is suspected; treatment depends on the finding.

Arrange medical assessment if redness spreads, warmth, swelling, pus, bleeding, increasing pain, or a bad smell develops. Seek prompt care after a major injury, if the nail is black with severe pressure pain, or if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation. A dark mark that does not grow out also deserves examination.
