My stomach is bloating: what should I do?

Short answer
Stomach bloating is often related to trapped gas, constipation, eating habits, or a food intolerance; track triggers, make gentle changes, and seek medical care for severe, persistent, or worrying symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common sensations
- Fullness, pressure, tightness, or visible abdominal swelling

- Record food, bowel habits, timing, and accompanying symptoms
- Urgent warning
- Sudden severe pain with marked swelling, vomiting, or inability to pass gas
What bloating can mean
Bloating is a feeling of fullness, pressure, or visible swelling in the abdomen. It can follow fizzy drinks, chewing gum, eating quickly, large meals, or foods that ferment during digestion. Constipation can also keep stool and gas in the bowel, making the abdomen feel tight.
Repeated bloating may occur with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Food Intolerance, or Lactose Intolerance. Coeliac Disease, Giardiasis, and Helicobacter Pylori Infection are other conditions a clinician may consider when bloating comes with diarrhoea, weight loss, nausea, pain, or changes in appetite. Bloating alone does not identify its cause.
Steps you can try
For a mild episode, eat slowly, choose smaller meals, drink water, and take a gentle walk. Reduce fizzy drinks and notice whether a particular food, portion size, or eating pattern precedes the symptom. If constipation is present, gradually increase fibre with fluids rather than making a sudden large change.
Keep a short record of meals, bowel movements, abdominal symptoms, and any medicines or supplements. Do not remove several food groups for a long period without professional guidance. A clinician or Nutrition Counselling service can help you test possible triggers while protecting a balanced diet.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical assessment if bloating keeps returning, does not settle, or is accompanied by ongoing abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, fever, or reduced appetite. Bring your symptom record and a list of medicines.
Seek urgent care for sudden severe abdominal pain, a hard or markedly swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, difficulty breathing, or inability to pass stool or gas. These symptoms can need prompt examination rather than home treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What causes should we consider from my pattern of symptoms? Could constipation, an intolerance, or another digestive condition be contributing? Which tests, if any, are appropriate? What changes should I try, and when should I return if the bloating continues?

Questions people ask
Can gas cause my stomach to bloat?
Yes. Swallowed air and gas produced during digestion can create pressure and abdominal fullness, especially after fizzy drinks, fast eating, or foods that trigger symptoms for you.
Should I stop eating dairy if I feel bloated?
Not automatically. Dairy may be a trigger for some people, but removing it without a plan can make your diet less balanced. Discuss a structured trial with a clinician, particularly if symptoms are frequent.
When does bloating need urgent attention?
Get urgent help for sudden severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, difficulty breathing, a hard markedly swollen abdomen, or inability to pass stool or gas.
