My son’s cough sounds like a bark: what should I know?

The sound may resemble a seal’s bark and can be louder at night. A viral illness such as a common cold may irritate the voice box and upper airway. A harsh sound when breathing in, a hoarse voice, fever, or noisy breathing can help a clinician judge severity. Cough is also seen with conditions such as acute bronchitis, asthma, bronchiolitis, or allergic rhinitis, but the sound alone cannot identify the cause.

Keep your son calm and upright, because crying can make noisy breathing worse. Offer frequent fluids and let him rest. Avoid cigarette smoke, strong scents, and unprescribed cough medicines. Listen to his breathing when he is settled, and note fever, fluid intake, urination, and whether symptoms are changing. Arrange medical advice if the cough persists, returns repeatedly, or interferes with sleep or drinking.

Get emergency help if he is struggling to breathe, the skin between his ribs pulls in, his lips look blue or grey, he cannot speak or cry normally, he is unusually drowsy, or he cannot swallow saliva. Seek same-day assessment for noisy breathing at rest, worsening symptoms, or signs of dehydration. Do not wait for a cough to settle if breathing is the concern.
