Why does my period keep starting and stopping?

Short answer

A period that starts and stops can reflect changing hormone signals, pregnancy, stress, illness, or a menstrual condition, so track the pattern and seek assessment if it persists or feels unusual.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Bleeding pattern alone cannot identify its cause

What an on-and-off period can mean

Light bleeding may pause before the uterine lining has fully shed. Hormone changes around the beginning or end of reproductive years can make bleeding less predictable. Stress, major changes in exercise or eating, illness, and some medicines may also alter ovulation and flow. Pregnancy can cause bleeding that is mistaken for a short period, including bleeding around the time a period was expected.

Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome can disrupt ovulation and lead to irregular bleeding. Menopause is reached after periods have stopped for a sustained period, while the transition beforehand can bring stop-start cycles. Premature ovarian insufficiency and Turner syndrome are less common possibilities that need clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

What you can do now

Record the first and last day of each episode, pauses, pad or tampon use, pain, clots, and any bleeding after sex. Note new medicines, contraception, weight change, intense training, sleep disruption, or recent illness. If pregnancy is possible, use a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and repeat or arrange medical advice if the result is negative but bleeding remains unusual.

Book a clinician visit if this pattern repeats, your cycles have changed for several months, or you have symptoms such as new facial hair, acne, hot flushes, vaginal dryness, or ongoing pelvic pain. The clinician may review your history, examine you, and decide whether pregnancy testing or other tests are appropriate.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding that quickly soaks protection, faintness, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, or bleeding with a positive pregnancy test. Arrange prompt care for fever, foul-smelling discharge, or bleeding after menopause. Otherwise, a non-urgent appointment is sensible when stop-start bleeding continues or keeps returning.

Questions for your doctor

Could pregnancy, contraception, thyroid or other hormone changes explain this pattern? Does my bleeding record suggest irregular ovulation? Which symptoms would change the urgency of my assessment?

Questions people ask

Is stop-start bleeding always a serious problem?

No. Temporary hormone or lifestyle changes can do this, but repeated or unusual bleeding deserves assessment.

Should I take a pregnancy test?

If pregnancy is possible, testing is a practical early step, especially when bleeding is shorter or different from usual.
