My period just stopped

Short answer
If your periods have stopped unexpectedly, first consider pregnancy and then arrange care to explore hormonal, ovarian, or other health-related causes.

Why periods may stop
Pregnancy is a common explanation when periods stop and sperm could have entered the vagina. Breastfeeding, major stress, illness, changes in weight or exercise, some medicines, and hormonal contraception can also suppress bleeding. Polycystic ovary syndrome may interrupt ovulation. Menopause causes periods to end after the transition, while premature ovarian insufficiency can reduce ovarian hormone activity earlier than expected. Turner syndrome is one possible inherited condition associated with ovarian development and menstrual function.
Note when your last period began, whether bleeding stopped suddenly or became lighter first, and any hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, pelvic pain, headaches, vision changes, nipple discharge, or new facial hair.
What to do next
Take a home pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. Arrange a routine appointment if the test is negative and periods do not return, if this has happened repeatedly, or if you are younger than expected for menopause. Bring your cycle history, contraception and medicine details, and relevant family history. A clinician may review hormones, thyroid-related symptoms, nutrition, stress, and ovarian function before choosing tests.
When to seek prompt care
Seek urgent help for severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding after periods have stopped, severe headache with vision changes, or pregnancy symptoms with pain or bleeding. Prompt assessment is also needed for fever, worsening pain, or feeling very unwell.
Questions to ask
Ask whether pregnancy testing and blood tests are appropriate, whether your symptoms suggest menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency, and how the change may affect bone, heart, fertility, or general health. Ask when to return if bleeding does not resume or new symptoms appear.
