What can cause a nose that is always blocked?

Allergic rhinitis can keep the lining swollen and may cause sneezing, itching, or watery discharge. Chronic sinusitis may cause pressure, thick mucus, cough, or reduced smell. A deviated nasal partition, enlarged tissue, nasal polyps, or irritation from smoke and fragrance can also narrow airflow. Repeated use of decongestant sprays can maintain congestion. A blocked nose can disturb sleep, but it does not by itself show that someone has obstructive sleep apnoea; snoring, gasping, or breathing pauses are separate clues that require assessment.

Record whether the blockage is on one side or both, and whether it changes with seasons, rooms, pets, dust, or medicines. Saline spray or a properly prepared rinse may clear mucus and soothe dryness.
