My husband has had hiccups for 2 days

Hiccups are repeated diaphragm spasms. They can follow a large meal, fast eating, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, or swallowed air. Persistent episodes may be associated with acid reflux, gastritis, a medicine effect, or irritation affecting the nerves and muscles involved in breathing.

Ask whether he has heartburn, sour fluid in the throat, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cough, or trouble sleeping. These details help a clinician decide whether reflux or another issue needs treatment.

Offer small sips of water and smaller, slower meals. He should avoid fizzy drinks, alcohol, very spicy foods, and lying flat soon after eating. Keep him hydrated if he can swallow normally, but follow any fluid restriction already prescribed. Do not give a new medicine or use choking-risk tricks to stop the hiccups.

Arrange a medical appointment if the hiccups continue or are affecting normal activities. Take his medicine list and note when the episode started, what preceded it, and whether anything briefly relieves it.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest or abdominal pain, confusion, new weakness, repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Request prompt assessment if he cannot sleep, eat, or drink because of the hiccups, or if he becomes unusually weak or dehydrated.
