Why do my fingers feel stiff and swollen?

Morning stiffness that eases as you move can point toward inflammation. Pain at the end joints or after repeated hand use can fit hand osteoarthritis. A finger that catches, clicks, or locks may reflect trigger finger, while a firm cord in the palm with gradual bending difficulty can occur with Dupuytren's Contracture. Remove rings before swelling increases. Rest from gripping and repetitive work, keep the hand gently moving within comfort, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Do not force a stiff or locked finger. Record which joints swell, when stiffness is worst, and whether warmth, redness, numbness, or fever appears. A clinician can examine the joints and tendons and decide whether imaging or blood tests are useful.

Seek urgent care for a finger that becomes pale, blue, very cold, severely painful, or suddenly difficult to move, or for rapidly spreading redness with fever. Arrange a prompt appointment after an injury, when swelling persists, or when several joints are swollen. Get assessed if morning stiffness keeps returning or hand function is declining.
