My fingers become stiff sometimes: what should I know?

Short answer
Intermittent finger stiffness is worth tracking because its triggers, duration, and accompanying pain or swelling help distinguish temporary irritation from a recurring hand problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why stiffness may come and go
Episodes after typing, gripping, or cold exposure may reflect temporary irritation or muscle and tendon tension. A finger that intermittently clicks or locks may fit trigger finger. Aching after use can occur with hand osteoarthritis. Stiffness with swelling in several joints can occur with rheumatoid arthritis, while a slowly tightening cord in the palm can occur with Dupuytren's Contracture. The fact that symptoms are intermittent does not rule out a condition, but it also does not point to one diagnosis on its own.
Make the pattern easier to assess
Keep a simple note of the activity, temperature, time of day, finger involved, pain, swelling, clicking, and how movement returns. Take a photograph if swelling appears briefly. Change position during repetitive tasks, use relaxed grip pressure, and move the fingers gently without forcing them. Arrange an assessment if episodes are becoming more frequent or interfering with work, dressing, or sleep; a clinician can check joints, tendons, sensation, and strength.
Do not ignore sudden changes
Seek urgent care if a finger suddenly becomes very swollen, hot, red, numb, blue, deformed, or impossible to move, especially after an injury or with fever. Make a routine appointment for recurring stiffness with pain, morning symptoms, catching, loss of grip, or a finger that is gradually losing its ability to straighten.
What to ask
Ask what your recorded triggers suggest, whether the symptoms fit a joint or tendon pattern, and whether examination or imaging is needed. Ask for task modifications, suitable exercises, and clear instructions for responding to a locked or swollen finger.

Questions people ask
Can cold make fingers stiff temporarily?
Cold can make the hand feel less flexible, but repeated or painful episodes should still be discussed with a clinician.
What does finger catching suggest?
Catching or locking can occur when a finger tendon does not glide smoothly, as in trigger finger, and deserves assessment if it persists.
