What should you know about musculoskeletal ultrasound CME?

Ultrasound sends sound waves through a handheld probe to produce live images. Unlike a still image alone, the clinician can watch a tendon glide, compare both sides, assess fluid, and examine a structure while you move. It is especially useful for many superficial tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves, and joint spaces, although it cannot see every structure equally well. CME is education for healthcare professionals, not a diagnosis or treatment for a patient. A Point-of-Care Ultrasound examination may support a clinical assessment, while formal imaging or another scan may be needed when the area is deep or the question is complex.

Wear clothing that allows access to the painful area. The clinician applies gel, moves the probe across the skin, and may ask you to bend, straighten, or resist movement. Tell them where pressure hurts and whether symptoms change during motion. There is usually no recovery period. Keep the written result and ask how it changes your plan. If an ultrasound identifies inflammation or a fluid-filled target, the clinician may discuss options such as physiotherapy or a Cortisone Injection, including expected benefits and possible risks.

Arrange urgent assessment for a suddenly weak or unusable limb, a cold or discoloured hand or foot, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain after trauma, fever with a hot red joint, or new loss of sensation. Ultrasound education does not replace an examination when symptoms are severe. If symptoms persist despite an initial plan, arrange review so the diagnosis and choice of imaging can be reconsidered.
