What should you know about musculoskeletal MRI structured evaluation?

The scan uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images without ionising radiation. A radiologist examines the requested body region systematically, then reports findings such as a tendon tear, ligament injury, cartilage change, bone marrow swelling, disc problem, joint fluid, or a mass. An abnormal image does not automatically explain every symptom; examination and symptom history still matter. Some scans use contrast material when clearer separation between tissues is needed. Tell the imaging team about implanted devices, metal fragments, kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, or difficulty staying still.

Follow the centre's instructions about food, drink, medicines, and clothing. Remove metal objects before entering the scanner and mention if enclosed spaces make you anxious. During the test, lie still while the table moves through the scanner; loud knocking sounds are expected, and hearing protection is provided. Afterward, ask when and how the report will be reviewed. The next step may be activity modification, physiotherapy, medication, an injection, or a surgical discussion, depending on the finding and your examination. A 3T MRI Scanner may be discussed when high-detail imaging is useful.

Seek urgent medical assessment for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs, a limb that becomes cold or pale, severe pain after major injury, or rapidly worsening swelling. Contact the clinician who ordered the scan if pain, fever, wound drainage, or loss of function develops while you await results. An MRI report should be interpreted alongside your symptoms rather than used as a stand-alone diagnosis.
