Short answer

New muscle weakness on one side is an emergency warning sign, especially when it starts suddenly or affects the face, arm, or leg.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Temporary weakness still needs urgent assessment

What one-sided weakness can indicate

Weakness may involve the face, arm, leg, or a combination on the same side. Sudden weakness can occur when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, as in a stroke; symptoms that resolve can occur with a transient ischaemic attack. Other neurological or musculoskeletal problems are possible, but the first task is to exclude an emergency. Numbness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, balance trouble, vision change, or a severe sudden headache increase concern.

Act while symptoms are happening

Call emergency services immediately and note the time the person was last known to be well. Keep them safe, seated or lying down, and do not give food, drink, or medicines unless instructed. Do not drive them yourself if emergency transport is available. Record their medicines, medical conditions, and whether symptoms are improving, because transient improvement does not remove the need for urgent assessment.

When to seek urgent care

Treat sudden one-sided weakness, facial drooping, new speech trouble, confusion, loss of vision, severe imbalance, or collapse as an emergency. Even if the weakness disappears, urgent assessment is needed because a transient episode can precede a more lasting event. Do not wait to see whether rest fixes it.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what caused the episode, which tests were performed, and how to reduce the risk of another event. Clarify which symptoms should trigger an immediate emergency call and how your medicines should be taken.

Should someone with weakness eat or drink?

Avoid giving food or drink until emergency clinicians advise, because swallowing may be affected.
