Muscle relaxer for headache: what to know

Tight scalp, neck, or shoulder muscles can accompany a tension-type headache, while congestion, fever, dehydration, heat, infection, anxiety, or migraine can require a different approach. Headache can occur with Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, Common Cold, COVID-19, Dengue Fever, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Dehydration, or Heat Exhaustion. A muscle relaxer may reduce muscle spasm in selected cases but does not treat infection, fluid loss, or every cause of head pain. Dizziness, sleepiness, and reduced alertness are possible.

Rest in a quiet, comfortable place, drink fluids if you can, and loosen sustained neck or jaw tension with gentle movement. Keep a record of onset, location, severity, associated symptoms, sleep, heat exposure, and any medicine used. Avoid alcohol and driving after a sedating medicine. A clinician can check your blood pressure, neurological symptoms, hydration, medicines, and headache pattern before recommending treatment.

Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck with fever, vision loss, repeated vomiting, or headache after a significant head injury. Get prompt advice for a new persistent headache, a changing pattern, or headache during a febrile illness or after heat exposure.
