What should you know about muscle pull in groin area?

Short answer
A muscle pull in the groin is usually an injury to the inner-thigh muscles that can cause pain with walking, running, cutting, or bringing the legs together.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical location
- Groin or inner thigh, often worse when drawing the legs together
- First priority
- Reduce painful loading while maintaining comfortable movement
- Return to sport
- Progress strength, running, and sport drills in stages
What a groin strain involves
The adductor muscles help draw the leg inward and stabilise the pelvis. A sudden change of direction, kick, slide, or wide step can overload these tissues. Pain is often felt along the inner thigh or groin and may be tender when the legs are gently squeezed together. Bruising or weakness suggests a more substantial injury.
Groin pain has other possible causes, including hip, abdominal-wall, urinary, or reproductive conditions. Pain that is not linked to movement, or that comes with illness symptoms, should not be assumed to be a muscle strain.
Early care and rehabilitation
Pause sprinting, kicking, lateral movement, and deep stretching while they provoke pain. Use comfortable walking, relative rest, and a wrapped cold pack during the early phase. Do not return to sport simply because walking feels easier; the inner-thigh muscles also need controlled strength and movement tolerance.
Exercise Therapy can guide progressive mobility and strengthening. Sports Physiotherapy may be useful for athletes, while a Return-to-Sport Programme can structure running, cutting, and sport-specific drills.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for a pop, substantial bruising, marked swelling, difficulty walking, or pain that does not improve. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal or groin pain, a new bulge, vomiting, fever, testicular pain, or inability to bear weight.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the adductor muscles, hip, or abdominal wall are involved, which exercises are safe, and what milestones should come before running or sport. Share whether the pain began during a kick, sprint, or change of direction.

Questions people ask
Can I stretch a groin strain straight away?
Avoid forceful stretching while the injury is acutely painful. Gentle, pain-limited movement is a safer starting point.
When is sport safe again?
Return when walking, resisted strength, running, and sport-specific movements are comfortable and controlled, ideally with a staged plan.
