What should you know about muscle cramps in ribs?

Short answer
Muscle cramps in the ribs are sudden tightening of the chest-wall muscles, often linked with strain, posture, exertion or fluid loss.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical feeling
- A sudden tight knot or pulling pain in the chest wall
- Useful clue
- Movement, coughing or touch may change muscular pain
- First step
- Pause, breathe gently and avoid the provoking activity
What rib cramps can mean
The spasm may feel like a hard knot, sharp catch or brief pulling pain along the ribs. It can follow coughing, lifting, twisting, exercise or sitting in one position. Dehydration and changes in minerals can make muscles more irritable. A muscle strain can also cause soreness that lasts after the spasm settles. Rib pain is not always muscular, so note whether breathing, movement or touch changes it and whether there is an injury.
What you can do
Stop the activity and breathe slowly without forcing a deep breath. Gently lengthen the side of the chest by raising the arm on the affected side, then relax; stop if pain increases. A warm pack may loosen a tight muscle, while a cool pack can help after a recent strain. Sip fluids if you may be dehydrated. Avoid forceful massage or strenuous twisting until ordinary movement is comfortable.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for chest pressure, severe or worsening pain, breathlessness, faintness, sweating, blue lips, coughing blood or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Arrange a clinical review if cramps recur, follow an injury, limit breathing, or come with fever, weakness or swelling. A clinician may review medicines, hydration, muscle function and other causes of chest-wall pain.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be a chest-wall strain or another cause? Should any medicine or supplement be reviewed? What activity and stretching are suitable while it heals?

Questions people ask
Can rib cramps happen after exercise?
Yes. Repeated twisting, lifting or forceful breathing can fatigue the chest-wall muscles and trigger a spasm.
Is every rib-area cramp a muscle problem?
No. Chest symptoms can have several causes, so urgent warning signs or persistent pain need medical assessment.
