Muscle aches in arms: what to know

Muscle aches in the arms can come from strain, infection, medicine effects, or an underlying health condition.

What arm aches may mean
Aching after lifting, exercise, repetitive work, or an awkward sleeping position often reflects irritated or tired muscle. Pain may be in one arm or both and can feel sore, tight, heavy, or tender when you move.
Illnesses that affect the whole body can also present with muscle aches in the arms. Influenza, COVID-19, dengue fever, malaria, and brucellosis may cause aches alongside fever, chills, headache, cough, or unusual tiredness. Fibromyalgia can involve widespread pain, while hypothyroidism may accompany cramps, stiffness, or weakness. An arm ache alone does not identify its cause.
What you can do now
Reduce the activity that triggers the pain, but keep the arm gently moving if movement is comfortable. Rest, a warm shower, or a wrapped cold pack may help; protect the skin from extreme temperatures. Drink fluids, eat normally, and note when the ache started, what preceded it, and whether swelling, rash, fever, numbness, or weakness appears.
A pharmacist or clinician can check whether a medicine or supplement may contribute. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. If the ache is not settling, keeps returning, or interferes with sleep or daily use, arrange a clinical assessment.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for sudden arm pain with chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, sweating, or pain spreading to the jaw or back. Get prompt assessment for a cold, pale, blue, swollen, or severely weak arm; new one-sided weakness; severe pain after an injury; or fever with marked illness. Contact a clinician soon if pain persists, progressively worsens, or comes with dark urine, significant weakness, or a widespread rash.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could the pattern fit muscle strain or a wider illness? Which examination or tests are useful? Could any medicine be contributing? What activity is safe while I recover? Which changes should prompt urgent review?
