Mumps, rubella and varicella: what to know

Mumps often causes tender swelling near the jaw, while rubella can cause a fine rash and swollen glands. Varicella, also called chickenpox, typically produces itchy spots that become fluid-filled blisters and then crusts. These illnesses can share fever, tiredness, or reduced appetite, so the rash pattern, contact history, vaccination history, and examination all matter.

Varicella is linked to shingles, which can occur later when the virus becomes active again. Rubella is especially significant during pregnancy because infection can harm a developing baby. Anyone with a new fever and rash should avoid close contact until a clinician gives clear advice.

Phone a GP practice before visiting and describe the fever, rash, facial swelling, and any recent exposure. Rest, drink fluids, and avoid sharing cups, towels, or clothing. Do not scratch blisters. A clinician may recommend antiviral treatment for selected chickenpox cases, antihistamine treatment for itch, or vaccination advice for contacts who are not protected. Keep a pregnant contact away from possible rubella or varicella and seek prompt advice after exposure.

Seek same-day medical advice for a fever with a spreading rash, painful jaw swelling, or symptoms during pregnancy. Get urgent help for breathing or swallowing difficulty, confusion, severe headache with neck stiffness, marked dehydration, or a rapidly worsening child. A baby or person with a weakened immune system needs prompt assessment after possible exposure.

Ask which illness is most consistent with the examination, whether testing is needed, how long to avoid close contact, which symptoms require emergency help, and whether household members need vaccination or pregnancy-specific advice.
