Short answer

Mumps can cause tender swelling around the jaw and upper neck, but other illnesses can look similar and need assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the swelling

Mumps is a viral infection that often affects the salivary glands beside the cheeks and below the ears. The swelling may make the neck look fuller and can hurt when chewing or swallowing. Fever, tiredness, headache and reduced appetite may accompany it, although symptoms differ between people. Neck swelling can also come from other infections or enlarged lymph glands, so its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

What you can do now

Arrange a GP consultation if swelling is new, painful or follows contact with someone who has suspected mumps. Call before arriving so the service can reduce exposure to other patients. Rest, take fluids in small frequent amounts and choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Do not share drinks, utensils or towels, and limit close contact until professional advice is received.

Warning signs

Seek same-day medical advice for worsening swelling, dehydration, ongoing fever, marked headache, vomiting, hearing changes or pain in the testicles or lower abdomen. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, severe trouble swallowing, confusion, a seizure or sudden deterioration. A clinician can decide whether examination, testing or monitoring is needed.

Useful questions

Ask what other causes have been considered, how long you should avoid close contact, whether anyone at home needs advice, and which pain-relief options are suitable for your age and health.

Questions people ask

Is every swollen neck a sign of mumps?

No. Several infections and other conditions can enlarge glands, so a clinician must interpret the swelling with the rest of your symptoms.

Should I go straight to a waiting room?

Phone the clinic first if mumps is possible, because separating people with infectious symptoms helps protect others.
