Mumps in women: symptoms, care and precautions

Short answer
Mumps in women is usually managed with rest, fluids and medical advice, while watching for complications or pregnancy-related concerns.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible symptoms
- Jaw swelling, fever, headache and tiredness.
- Pregnancy
- Tell a clinician if pregnancy is possible.
- Infection control
- Call ahead and limit close contact while unwell.
How mumps may appear
Mumps is a viral infection that can inflame the salivary glands near the cheeks and jaw. Women may notice facial swelling, pain when chewing, fever, headache, tiredness or swollen glands. Some people have few symptoms, and other infections can look similar. A symptom does not by itself identify mumps.
Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, breastfeeding, or taking medicines that affect immunity. This helps them choose suitable advice and decide whether testing is needed. Mumps is contagious, so call before going to a surgery or clinic.
What you can do now
Rest and sip fluids often. Soft foods may be easier if the jaw is tender; avoid foods that make the glands hurt. Do not share drinks, cutlery, towels or lip products. Follow local medical advice about staying away from work, school and close contacts. A GP consultation can help confirm the next step: [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/).
If pregnancy is possible, mention it before taking any medicine or arranging vaccination. Do not use antibiotics for suspected mumps unless prescribed, because antibiotics do not act against viruses. Vaccine questions can be discussed through [MMR Vaccination](/treatments/preventive-care-and-vaccination/mmr-vaccination/).
Warning signs
Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, a seizure, severe headache with neck stiffness, collapse, or inability to drink. Seek prompt assessment for severe lower abdominal pain, unusual vaginal bleeding, hearing changes, or persistent vomiting. Fever may accompany mumps; see [Fever](/symptoms/fever/) for general symptom guidance. Swelling under the jaw or in the neck can have several causes, including [Swollen Glands](/symptoms/swollen-glands/).
Useful questions
