How long does mumps last?

Early symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle aches, reduced appetite and tiredness. Swelling around the jaw or cheeks can appear later and may be uncomfortable when chewing or swallowing. Recovery is gradual rather than immediate. Persistent or returning fever, worsening pain, or new symptoms should prompt a clinical review. Rest, drink enough fluid, choose soft foods if chewing hurts, and use simple pain relief only as directed for you. Arrange medical advice if symptoms worsen, fever persists, dehydration makes it hard to drink, or swelling remains painful. Get urgent help for severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, a seizure, breathing difficulty, severe abdominal pain or sudden testicular pain.
