What should you know about multiplex immunohistochemistry?

Short answer

Multiplex immunohistochemistry uses several markers on a tissue sample to show which proteins are present and where cells are located.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the method works

Immunohistochemistry uses antibodies designed to attach to selected proteins in cells. A visible signal then helps a laboratory team identify those proteins under a microscope. The multiplex approach examines several markers together, which can help distinguish different cell types within the same piece of tissue and show how they are arranged.

The method is performed on prepared tissue, commonly from a biopsy or an operation. It is an additional laboratory assessment, not a scan and not a treatment. Results are interpreted alongside the tissue appearance, clinical information, imaging, and other pathology findings. A marker result is not meaningful in isolation; the full pattern and sample quality matter.

What to do with the result

Ask which markers were tested and what clinical question they were intended to answer. Request an explanation of whether the pattern supports a diagnosis, helps classify a tumour, or guides treatment planning. Ask whether the sample was adequate and whether another pathology review or test is needed. If the test followed a biopsy, clarify when the complete pathology report is expected and who will discuss it with you.

When to contact your care team

Multiplex immunohistochemistry itself does not usually create a new symptom because the analysis is performed on tissue already collected. Contact your care team promptly after a biopsy or procedure for heavy bleeding, increasing redness or swelling, worsening pain, fever, or drainage from the site. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or signs of a severe reaction after a procedure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What did the markers show? How does the pattern affect the diagnosis or treatment plan? Was the tissue sample sufficient? Could another laboratory review the findings? When will the results be combined with the rest of my pathology report?

Questions people ask

Is multiplex immunohistochemistry a treatment?

No. It is a laboratory method used to study tissue and support diagnosis or treatment planning.

Does one marker prove a diagnosis?

Usually, interpretation relies on the combined marker pattern, tissue appearance, and clinical context.
