Multiple sclerosis and overactive bladder

Short answer
Multiple sclerosis can disrupt bladder nerve signals, causing urgency, frequent urination, incomplete emptying or leakage that deserves assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible pattern
- Urgency, frequency, retention or leakage
- Useful record
- A bladder diary with drinks and toilet visits
What it can mean
Nerve changes may make the bladder contract before it is full, creating a sudden urge that is difficult to defer. Some people instead have weak bladder contraction or poor coordination between the bladder and its outlet, so urine remains behind. Constipation, urinary infection, reduced mobility and medicines can add to symptoms, so a new change should not automatically be attributed to multiple sclerosis.
Keep a short bladder diary with drinks, toilet visits, urgency, leakage and nighttime waking. This can show patterns and help a clinician distinguish urgency from retention or another cause.
What you can do
Arrange a review with your neurologist, GP or continence clinician, especially if symptoms are new or worsening. They may check urine, ask about bowel function and medicines, and measure whether urine remains after you pass it. Treatment can include timed toilet visits, fluid and caffeine adjustments, pelvic-floor rehabilitation, medicines or a catheter plan when emptying is difficult.
Bladder training can gradually lengthen the time between planned toilet visits when urgency is the main problem. Read about [Bladder Training](/treatments/pelvic-floor-and-rehabilitation/bladder-training/) and [Urodynamic Testing](/treatments/diagnostics-and-imaging/urodynamic-testing/) if your symptoms need detailed assessment.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical advice for fever, burning urine, blood in the urine, new flank pain, inability to pass urine, or sudden worsening with weakness or confusion. Contact your care team urgently if bladder symptoms appear with a new neurological change. Leakage that repeatedly limits sleep, work or activities also merits review; information about [Leaking Urine](/symptoms/leaking-urine/) may help you describe it.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be urgency, retention, infection, constipation or a medicine effect? Do I need a urine test or bladder scan? Would bladder training, pelvic-floor therapy or urodynamic testing suit my pattern? What symptoms should trigger same-day advice?

Questions people ask
Can multiple sclerosis cause urinary leakage?
Yes. Altered bladder sensation or sudden contractions can lead to urge leakage, while mobility changes can make reaching a toilet harder.
Does every bladder symptom come from multiple sclerosis?
No. Infection, constipation, medicines and other urinary problems can cause similar symptoms and should be considered.
