What should you know about multiple ringworm spots?

Ringworm is not caused by a worm. It is a fungal infection that may form round or ring-shaped patches with a clearer centre, a scaly edge, itching, or gradual outward growth. New spots can appear when the infection remains active, when another body site is involved, or after contact with an infected person, animal, towel, clothing, or shared surface. The appearance can overlap with other rashes, so a clinician may examine the skin and take a sample if the diagnosis is uncertain.

Arrange a medical assessment if spots are multiplying, covering a large area, or not improving with appropriate care. Use the prescribed antifungal exactly as directed and continue for the advised period, even if the surface looks clearer sooner. Keep affected skin clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, avoid scratching, and do not share towels, clothing, hairbrushes, or bedding. Wash fabrics that touch the rash and consider whether household members or pets have a similar rash. Depending on the location and extent, care may involve topical antifungal treatment or oral antifungal treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice if the rash involves the scalp, beard area, nails, or a child’s skin, because these sites may need a different treatment plan. Get urgent help for rapidly increasing redness, marked swelling, pus, fever, severe pain, or feeling unwell. A rash that repeatedly returns, spreads despite treatment, or is difficult to identify also deserves review rather than repeated self-treatment.

Ask whether the spots look like ringworm or another rash, whether testing is needed, how long treatment should continue, and how to reduce spread at home. Mention any scalp, nail, facial, or genital involvement and any medicines already used.
