Multiple pea-sized lumps in the neck: what to know

Lymph nodes can swell near a sore throat, dental problem, ear infection, skin infection, or other immune response. The location, tenderness, movement, texture, duration, and associated symptoms help guide assessment. Less common causes include thyroid conditions, lymphoma, head and neck cancer, or cancer found in lymph nodes when the original site is not yet known. A lump alone cannot establish which cause is present.

Arrange a medical appointment if several lumps remain, enlarge, feel hard or fixed, or occur without a clear recent infection. Note when they appeared, whether they hurt, and any fever, night sweats, weight change, voice change, swallowing difficulty, or dental symptoms. A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, thyroid, and lymph-node areas, then choose blood tests, imaging, or a needle sample based on the findings.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe neck pain with fever, or swelling with facial or tongue enlargement. Arrange prompt review for a lump above the collarbone, unexplained bleeding, persistent hoarseness, or a lump that continues to grow.

Ask whether the lumps feel like lymph nodes, what examination or test is appropriate, how long to monitor them, and which changes should prompt earlier review. If a thyroid cause is suspected, ask whether thyroid imaging or thyroid removal surgery could be relevant.
