What should you know about multiple bed bug bites?

Bites often appear as itchy red or swollen bumps on exposed skin, sometimes in groups or lines. The reaction can be delayed, and different people in the same home may show different skin findings. A rash alone does not prove that bed bugs are the cause; fleas, mosquitoes, contact dermatitis, and other conditions can resemble it.

Scratching can break the skin and allow a bacterial infection to develop. Bed bugs are treated as an environmental pest problem as well as a skin problem, so ongoing new bites suggest that the source has not yet been controlled.

Wash affected skin gently and use a cool compress for comfort. Keep fingernails short and avoid scratching. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or topical corticosteroid is appropriate for your symptoms, age, pregnancy status, and other medicines.

Inspect sleeping areas and arrange professional pest control when needed. Wash and heat-dry suitable bedding and clothing according to their care instructions, and reduce clutter around the bed. Do not apply household insecticide directly to skin.

Seek medical advice if bites become increasingly painful, hot, swollen, crusted, or draining, or if fever develops. Get urgent help for facial or throat swelling, wheezing, dizziness, or widespread hives after a bite.
