What should you know about a multinodular goitre?

The thyroid sits at the front of the neck and makes hormones that influence body processes. A goitre may be visible or felt as fullness, and nodules can vary in size and activity. Some people have no symptoms; others notice pressure, swallowing difficulty, voice change, or symptoms of overactive or underactive thyroid function. Most nodules are not cancerous, but each needs appropriate clinical assessment rather than judgement from appearance alone.

Arrange a GP Consultation for a neck examination and review of symptoms, medicines, and family history. A Thyroid Function Test can show whether hormone production is too high, too low, or within the expected range. Ultrasound may assess the number and features of nodules, and a needle sample may be recommended for a nodule with concerning features. Treatment may be observation, medicine, radioiodine, or surgery depending on symptoms, hormone results, and findings.

Seek urgent care if neck swelling causes difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, or rapidly worsening pressure. Arrange prompt review for new persistent hoarseness, a quickly enlarging lump, or marked racing heartbeat with shaking, sweating, or faintness.

Ask whether your thyroid is overactive or underactive, which nodule features need follow-up, whether imaging or sampling is needed, and how changes in size or symptoms will be monitored.
