Multiple melanomas: what the term may mean

Clinicians may use this phrase when a person has more than one suspicious or confirmed melanoma lesion. Each lesion may need comparison because separate primary melanomas are different from one melanoma found in another site. A pathology report, skin and lymph-node examination, and selected imaging help the team determine whether lesions are related.

Melanoma can begin in skin or, less commonly, other pigment-containing lining tissue. If it has travelled to a distant organ, the finding is called metastatic disease; symptoms and treatment depend on the site. See the main [Melanoma](/conditions/melanoma/) guide for context.

Book a coordinated review with a dermatologist or skin-cancer team. Photograph or list each changing spot, note when it appeared, and bring earlier pathology and scan reports. Do not remove, scratch, or self-treat suspicious lesions. A clinician may biopsy more than one site when the results could change staging or treatment.

Care can include removal of a primary lesion, lymph-node assessment, imaging, and discussion of systemic therapy. Arrange prompt assessment for a mole or spot that changes in size, shape, colour, or surface, or that bleeds or does not heal. Seek urgent help for severe headache with new weakness, confusion, seizure, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening illness. These symptoms have many possible causes, but they should not be ignored in someone being assessed for melanoma.

Ask whether the lesions appear to be separate primaries or spread from one melanoma, and which biopsy should come first. Ask what the pathology shows, whether lymph nodes or distant organs need imaging, and how each result changes treatment. Discuss skin surveillance, self-checks, sun protection, family considerations, and the plan for long-term follow-up.
