What should you know about an MSD rabies vaccine?

Rabies vaccination trains the immune system to recognise rabies virus. It may be offered before a foreseeable risk, such as work or travel involving animals, or after a bite, scratch or saliva contact that could transmit infection. Post-exposure care can also involve thorough wound cleaning and, for some exposures, rabies immunoglobulin. A clinician selects the product and schedule according to the exposure, age, health, previous doses and local guidance. Vaccination does not make it safe to ignore a new exposure.

After a possible exposure, wash the area promptly with soap and running water and attend urgent medical care. Take your vaccination record and explain when and how contact happened. For preventive vaccination, complete the appointments advised by the clinic and report immune problems, pregnancy, allergies or medicines that affect immunity. Mild soreness or tiredness can occur after vaccination; ask the treating team what to expect and how to report a concerning reaction.

Obtain urgent assessment after a bite, scratch or saliva contact with broken skin or the eyes or mouth, even if the wound looks minor. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, collapse or severe confusion after an injection. Do not wait for fever, tingling, trouble swallowing or behavioural changes after an exposure, because prevention is needed before rabies symptoms develop.
