What should you know about urinary urgency?

Urgency can occur with frequent urination, leakage, burning, pelvic discomfort or waking at night. A urinary tract infection commonly presents with urgency alongside burning, cloudy urine or lower abdominal discomfort. Prostatitis may present with urgency, pelvic pain, fever or difficulty passing urine. Benign prostatic hyperplasia can narrow the urine channel and cause a weak stream, hesitancy and incomplete emptying. Caffeine, alcohol, constipation, concentrated urine and some medicines may also aggravate bladder sensations. Urgency alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Drink regularly rather than trying to avoid fluids, unless a clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Reduce caffeine and alcohol temporarily, and avoid holding urine for long periods. Note frequency, leakage, pain, fever, urine changes and any weak stream. A clinician may ask for a urine sample and review medicines, fluid intake and prostate or bladder symptoms.

Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have severe lower abdominal pain, fever with back or side pain, confusion, vomiting, or visible blood in urine. Arrange medical assessment for new urgency with burning, pregnancy, recurrent episodes, leakage that disrupts daily life, or symptoms that persist. Prompt care matters when infection or urinary blockage is possible.
