Are mRNA vaccines dangerous?

An mRNA vaccine carries temporary instructions that help the immune system recognise a target. It cannot cause the infection it is designed to prevent, and the mRNA is cleared after it has been used. Soreness at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, chills, or fever may reflect immune activity and often settle without specific treatment.

Serious reactions need individual assessment. Allergy can appear soon after vaccination. Rare inflammation involving the heart has been reported after some mRNA vaccines, particularly in certain age and sex groups; chest symptoms should never be ignored.

Before vaccination, share allergies, previous vaccine reactions, heart symptoms, pregnancy, immune conditions, and medicines with the vaccinator. Remain for the observation period recommended at the site. Rest, drink fluids, and use symptom medicine only if a healthcare professional says it is suitable for you.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or facial swelling, collapse, or a rapidly spreading itchy rash. Obtain urgent medical assessment for chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, or a pounding heartbeat after vaccination. A fever or injection-site reaction that is severe, lasts longer than expected, or is getting worse should be discussed with a clinician.
