What should you know about an mRNA rabies vaccine?

mRNA carries a short-lived instruction that cells can use to make a selected rabies-related protein. Immune cells then learn to recognise that target, and the mRNA is broken down. It does not change DNA and does not contain live rabies virus. Rabies is unusual because symptoms can appear only after a serious delay, while illness after symptoms begin is extremely dangerous. That is why vaccination after a credible exposure is handled as urgent prevention, not as routine self-care.

Wash a bite, scratch, or area contaminated by saliva thoroughly with soap and running water, then seek urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for symptoms or rely on an online description of the vaccine. Give the clinician details about the animal, the contact, the wound, the time of exposure, and whether the animal can be observed or tested. Post-exposure care may involve wound management, vaccination, and additional treatment according to the exposure assessment.

Seek urgent care after a bite or scratch from a mammal that could carry rabies, or when saliva contacts broken skin, the eyes, mouth, or another mucous membrane. Go urgently for fever, unusual tingling near a wound, trouble swallowing, agitation, confusion, weakness, or breathing difficulty. Do not wait for an animal to become ill before obtaining advice.

Ask whether the exposure needs post-exposure prophylaxis, which vaccine product and schedule are appropriate, whether additional treatment is needed, and how wound care should continue. If you had rabies vaccination before, tell the clinician when and why, and ask how that changes the plan.
