What should you know about MRI versus CT scan?

MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images, especially of soft tissues such as the brain, muscles, joints, and many pelvic organs. CT uses x-rays to produce cross-sectional images quickly and can be useful for bones, the lungs, bleeding, and urgent assessment. Both may use an injected imaging contrast agent to make selected tissues or blood vessels easier to see. Neither scan alone determines every diagnosis; the report is interpreted with your symptoms, examination, and other results.

Tell the clinician about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, implanted devices, metal fragments, kidney problems, previous contrast reactions, and difficulty with enclosed spaces. Ask why one scan is preferred and whether contrast is planned. For MRI, safety screening for metal and electronic implants is essential. For CT, the team considers radiation exposure and whether the expected information justifies it. Follow the appointment instructions about food, drink, and medicines, and bring earlier images when requested.

Seek urgent care for sudden weakness, new confusion, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, a major injury, or sudden severe headache. These symptoms may require rapid assessment, and waiting for a routine scan can delay care. After contrast, get emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, collapse, or widespread hives. Contact the imaging team about milder but persistent symptoms after an injection.

What diagnosis are we investigating? Which scan is likely to answer that question most clearly? Is contrast needed, and what safety checks apply to me? Could an earlier scan be compared with the new images? How quickly should the result be reviewed, and what follow-up would depend on it?
