What should you know about an MRI machine for the back?

Short answer

An MRI machine for the back creates detailed images of the spine, discs, nerves and surrounding soft tissues without using X-rays.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the machine examines

You lie on a motorised table that moves into the scanner. The machine uses a magnetic field and radio waves to form image slices of the requested spinal region. Depending on the question, the images can show discs, vertebrae, the spinal canal, nerve roots, ligaments, muscles and signs of fluid or inflammation. The scan may help clinicians investigate persistent back pain, leg symptoms, weakness, a suspected disc problem or a previous injury. An image finding is not automatically the cause of pain, so the report is matched with your history and neurological examination.

Before and during the scan

Tell the imaging team about metal fragments, implants, medication pumps, hearing devices, kidney disease, allergies and possible pregnancy. Remove jewellery, cards and other metal items as instructed. Loud knocking sounds are expected, and ear protection is provided. Staying still helps the images remain clear; you can communicate with the team during the examination. If enclosed spaces worry you, mention this before the appointment. A [3T MRI Scanner](/technology/3t-mri-scanner/) is designed to provide strong, detailed MRI imaging, but the appropriate scanner and sequence depend on your clinical question.

When to seek care promptly

Back pain with new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or worsening weakness in both legs needs emergency assessment. Seek urgent help for back pain with fever and feeling very unwell, or after a serious injury. Do not wait for a routine scan appointment when these warning signs appear.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which spinal area should be scanned, what symptom the examination is investigating, whether contrast is needed, and how the findings could affect physiotherapy, medicines or further care. Ask what warning symptoms require immediate help.

Questions people ask

Does a back MRI use radiation?

MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves rather than X-rays.

Can an MRI explain every cause of back pain?

No. Some pain is related to movement, muscles or nerves and must be assessed clinically alongside the images.
