What should you know about MRD flow cytometry?

MRD means measurable residual disease. Flow cytometry examines many cells from a blood or bone marrow sample and sorts them by features such as size, structure, and proteins on their surface. A laboratory compares the pattern with expected healthy cells and with the known features of the disease. The report may describe disease as detected or not detected at the test's sensitivity. A result is interpreted alongside the original diagnosis, treatment history, sample quality, and other tests; it does not by itself predict exactly what will happen next.

Ask which sample is needed, whether any medicines or recent treatment could affect timing, and when the report will be reviewed. A bone marrow sample may be collected during a bone marrow biopsy. Keep the appointment where your oncology team explains the result, because the next step may involve observation, another test, or a change in treatment. Bring previous laboratory reports if your team requests them.

Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, chills, unusual bleeding, worsening weakness, or increasing pain after a sample is collected. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether the MRD result is detected or not detected.

Ask what cells the test is looking for, how sensitive the laboratory method is, whether the sample was adequate, and how this result fits with imaging or other laboratory findings. Ask when repeat testing is planned and what symptoms should prompt a call.
