What should you know about MPR CT scans?

MPR stands for multiplanar reconstruction. It is an image-display method applied to CT data, rather than a separate scan performed after the examination. The scan may be viewed as slices from different angles, which can make the position and shape of a finding easier to understand.

A standard CT acquisition collects cross-sectional information through the body. MPR software reorganises that information into views such as coronal images, which look from front to back, and sagittal images, which look from side to side. These views can be useful when an organ, blood vessel, bone, or other structure extends in a direction that is difficult to judge on one slice.

The MPR label does not by itself describe a diagnosis, the seriousness of a finding, or whether cancer is present. The radiologist interprets the reconstructed images together with the original images, your symptoms, medical history, and the reason for the scan.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about eating, drinking, regular medicines, and arrival time. Tell the team if you could be pregnant, have had a reaction to contrast material, or have kidney problems. Ask whether contrast is planned, because preparation can differ when contrast is used.

During the examination, you lie on a table that moves through the CT scanner while the equipment collects images. Staying still helps reduce image blur. Afterward, the radiologist reviews the scan and sends a report to the clinician who requested it. The requesting clinician explains what the findings mean for your care.

Contact the imaging team promptly if you develop swelling, trouble breathing, widespread itching, or faintness during or after a scan involving contrast material. These symptoms need timely assessment.
