What should you know about mouth guard to stop snoring?

Short answer
A dentist-fitted oral appliance may reduce snoring for some people, but persistent snoring or breathing pauses require assessment for obstructive sleep apnoea first.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Best first step
- Assess breathing pauses before choosing a device.
- Fitting
- Use an appliance assessed and fitted for you.
- Monitor
- Jaw pain, bite changes and daytime sleepiness.
What a mouth guard does
An anti-snoring oral appliance holds the lower jaw or tongue in a position that can leave more room behind the tongue during sleep. It is different from a sports mouthguard and should fit the person using it.
A blocked nose from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis can still drive mouth breathing and snoring, so a dental device may not address the main cause. Jaw discomfort, tooth movement, bite changes, dry mouth or excess saliva can occur and should be discussed with the dentist.
Using one safely
Have a dentist or sleep clinician assess your teeth, jaw and snoring pattern before choosing an appliance. Ask how it should be cleaned, stored and adjusted. Stop using it and arrange review if you develop persistent jaw pain, damaged teeth, a changed bite or worsening sleep symptoms.
Keep a record of snoring, morning symptoms and any observed breathing pauses. Side sleeping, avoiding alcohol near bedtime and addressing nasal blockage may also help. Weight management may be relevant when body weight contributes to airway narrowing.
When to seek care
Seek medical assessment before self-treating if someone notices breathing pauses, choking or gasping, or if you have marked daytime sleepiness or morning headaches. Urgent help is needed for severe breathing difficulty while awake, blue lips or sudden confusion.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether an oral appliance suits your jaw and teeth, whether a sleep assessment is needed, and how to distinguish ordinary snoring from obstructive sleep apnoea. Ask who will monitor the fit and your symptoms.

Questions people ask
Can any mouthguard stop snoring?
No. Sports guards and poorly fitting devices are not designed for this purpose; suitability depends on the airway, jaw and dental assessment.
Will a mouthguard treat sleep apnoea?
An oral appliance may be considered for selected people, but suspected sleep apnoea needs medical assessment and a tailored treatment plan.
