What is the most effective GERD medication?

Short answer
The most effective GERD medication depends on your symptoms, their frequency, other medicines and whether reflux has caused complications.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How GERD medicines work
GERD, also called acid reflux, happens when stomach contents move back into the oesophagus and irritate it. Antacids can give short relief by neutralising acid. Other medicines reduce acid production for longer, but the best choice depends on whether symptoms are occasional, frequent or associated with inflammation. Reflux may cause a sour taste, burning behind the breastbone, cough or disturbed sleep. A hiatus hernia, certain foods, large late meals and excess abdominal pressure can contribute, but chest tightness is not automatically reflux.
Using treatment well
Follow the label or prescriber’s directions, including whether a tablet should be taken before food. Avoid taking several acid medicines together without checking with a pharmacist or clinician. Keep a brief record of triggers, meal timing, night symptoms and response; this helps decide whether treatment should be adjusted or reviewed. Smaller meals, remaining upright after eating and raising the head end of the bed may help some people. Do not stop a long-term prescription abruptly without advice.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for swallowing difficulty, food sticking, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, black stools, vomiting blood or symptoms that persist despite treatment. Seek emergency help for severe or new chest pain, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. A chronic cough may have several causes and deserves assessment if it does not settle.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which medicine suits your pattern, when to take it, how long to try it and what side effects matter. Ask whether persistent symptoms need testing or a review of other causes, medicines and lifestyle triggers.

Questions people ask
Can GERD medicine help a cough?
It may help when reflux contributes to the cough, but chronic cough can have other causes and may need separate assessment.
Should I take antacids every day?
Frequent need for antacids is a reason to discuss a longer-term plan with a clinician rather than self-treating indefinitely.
