What should you know about the most common site of metastasis?

Metastasis describes cancer cells growing away from the original lung tumour. Brain metastases may affect balance, strength, speech, vision, memory, or cause seizures. Spread to bone can cause local pain or weakness, while liver or adrenal involvement may be silent at first. A symptom alone cannot identify the site or prove that cancer has spread. Doctors combine examination, imaging, pathology when needed, and the known lung cancer subtype to interpret a finding.

Ask your team which imaging has been completed and whether another scan is needed. If a suspicious area is found, the next step may be comparison with earlier images, additional imaging, or a biopsy. Treatment can include systemic medicines, radiotherapy to a specific area, or surgery in selected circumstances. Genomic tumour profiling may help match lung cancer with a suitable targeted medicine. Palliative care can address pain, breathlessness, sleep, and emotional strain alongside cancer treatment.

Call emergency services for a seizure, sudden weakness, new speech difficulty, severe confusion, collapse, or severe breathing trouble. Contact the oncology team quickly about a new severe headache, repeated vomiting, new difficulty walking, severe back pain, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Report persistent hoarseness as well, particularly when it is accompanied by swallowing or breathing changes.

Which metastatic sites have been checked? What did each scan show? Does any finding need tissue confirmation? How would treatment change if spread is present? Which symptoms should prompt an emergency call rather than a routine message?
