What should you know about the most common site for diverticulitis?

Diverticula are small pouches that can form in the bowel wall. When one becomes inflamed, pain is often felt in the lower left abdomen, although discomfort can vary with the exact position of the bowel and individual anatomy. Diverticulitis may also cause fever, nausea, constipation, or diarrhoea. Diverticular Disease describes the wider range of pouch-related changes and does not mean every pouch is inflamed.

Contact a clinician for new, persistent, or significant abdominal pain rather than trying to diagnose its location yourself. Assessment may include questions, an examination, and tests chosen according to your symptoms. Follow advice about fluids, food, and medicines, and do not take laxatives or anti-inflammatory painkillers without checking if diverticulitis is possible. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, heavy rectal bleeding, or inability to pass stool and gas.
