What should you know about the most common liver metastases?

Liver metastases are deposits of cancer that started in another organ and travelled to the liver. They are different from a cancer that begins in liver cells, so the original tumour’s type and biology guide treatment. Bowel Cancer and Pancreatic Cancer are common primary sources, but the care team considers the full medical history and scan pattern before drawing conclusions.

Some people have no liver-related symptoms at first. Others may notice right-sided abdominal discomfort, reduced appetite, nausea, tiredness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or itching. These symptoms can have other causes, and they do not by themselves establish Liver Metastases. Blood tests and imaging help the team understand liver function and the extent of disease.

Ask the oncology team what the scans show, whether a biopsy is needed, and how the original cancer is being treated. Depending on the number, position, and size of deposits and your general health, options may include Chemotherapy, Liver Resection, or Tumour Ablation. Treatment may target the liver, the original cancer, or both, with symptom control included in the plan.

Seek urgent medical help for new confusion, severe drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, fever with shaking, or rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes. These signs may indicate bleeding, infection, bile-flow blockage, or liver dysfunction and should not wait for a routine review.

Ask where the primary cancer began, how much of the liver is involved, and whether liver function is affected. Ask whether surgery or ablation is technically suitable, how systemic treatment fits the plan, and which changes should trigger urgent contact.
