What should you know about most common cause of conjunctivitis?

Viral conjunctivitis often spreads through close contact and may occur with a cold. Bacterial conjunctivitis can cause thicker eye discharge, while allergy often causes itching and affects both eyes. Irritants such as dust, smoke or chemicals can also inflame the surface.

Redness alone cannot reliably identify the cause. Light sensitivity, pain or a change in vision is less typical of simple conjunctivitis and deserves clinical assessment.

Wash hands often, avoid rubbing the eyes, and do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics or eye drops. Clean discharge gently with clean water and a fresh pad for each eye. Pause contact lenses until symptoms have settled and a clinician confirms it is safe to restart them.

Antibiotic treatment may help selected bacterial infections but will not treat viral or allergic conjunctivitis. Do not use leftover drops because some eye medicines can worsen the problem.

Arrange prompt medical review for eye pain, marked light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, injury, chemical exposure, or a red eye in a contact-lens wearer. Seek emergency help after a chemical splash: rinse the eye continuously with clean running water while getting assistance.

Ask what cause is most likely, whether you should avoid work or school, when lenses can be worn again, and which discharge or vision changes need urgent review. Mention allergies, recent infections and any eye products you have used.
