What should you know about morphle digital pathology?

A glass slide containing a tissue section can be scanned into a high-resolution digital image. Software can help organise cases, display regions of interest and support collaboration between authorised members of a pathology team. A pathologist examines the tissue features and combines that review with the specimen details, clinical history and other tests.

Digital tools may make it easier to share an image for consultation or compare areas on a slide. They do not turn an image into a complete diagnosis without professional review. Scan quality, tissue preparation, image settings and the limits of software all affect what can be assessed.

Ask whether your tissue has been scanned, whether the digital image is being used for the primary report or an additional review, and which pathologist is signing the result. Confirm how the original slides and tissue block are stored. If your report uses unfamiliar terms, request an explanation of the diagnosis, grade or biomarker findings in plain language.

If the result is complex or a major treatment decision depends on it, ask whether a second opinion is appropriate. Share the pathology report and relevant scans through the secure route provided by your care team.

Digital pathology itself does not usually create symptoms. Contact your clinical team promptly if you develop worsening pain, bleeding, fever, drainage or redness after the procedure that obtained the tissue. Seek urgent care for severe bleeding, fainting, sudden breathlessness or rapidly worsening illness while you await results.

Ask what specimen was examined, whether the scan was technically adequate, what the pathologist concluded and whether additional stains or tests are needed. You can also ask how the digital review affects your treatment plan, whether another pathologist will review it and when you will receive the final report.
