What should you know about morphea side effects?

Morphea, also called localised scleroderma, causes areas of skin to become firmer than nearby skin. Early patches may look pink, purple or lighter, then develop a pale centre with a firmer border. As inflammation settles, the affected area can leave a difference in colour or a shallow depression. A patch over a joint may make stretching harder. Widespread or deeper disease can involve tissue below the skin, while morphea itself is different from systemic scleroderma.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if a firm, changing patch is new or spreading. Take dated photographs in consistent lighting and note itch, pain, tightness and any change in movement. Use a gentle cleanser and regular moisturiser, and protect altered skin from sun exposure. Treatment depends on activity, depth and location; options may include prescribed creams such as topical calcineurin inhibitors or light treatment such as Narrowband UVB Phototherapy. Do not start these treatments without an assessment.

Seek prompt medical review if the area is rapidly enlarging, becomes painful, ulcerated or unusually warm, or if tightness limits a joint. Contact a clinician soon for changes on the face or scalp, especially with headaches, vision changes or an indentation. New weakness, numbness or difficulty using an affected limb also warrants prompt assessment.

Ask whether the disease appears active, how deep it is, and whether a biopsy or other examination would clarify the diagnosis. Discuss which treatment fits the affected body area, how progress will be checked, and what skin changes should be reported between visits.
