Short answer

Morphea on the face is a localised scleroderma condition that can harden or change the colour of facial skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What facial morphea can look and feel like

A patch may begin with a different colour or a slightly swollen, firm feel before becoming smoother, tighter or more clearly defined. Facial disease can affect the skin near the forehead, cheek, jaw or eye. The appearance alone cannot confirm morphea because other inflammatory or pigment conditions can resemble it. A dermatologist may examine the border, texture and activity of the patch and sometimes recommend a skin biopsy.

Practical next steps

Arrange a dermatology assessment, especially if a patch is enlarging, becoming harder, or changing facial movement. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, avoid picking or irritating products, and protect exposed skin from sunlight to reduce contrast between affected and unaffected areas. Depending on depth and activity, treatment may involve a prescribed topical medicine, light treatment such as Narrowband UVB Phototherapy, or broader therapy for deeper disease. Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors may be discussed for selected facial areas.

When to seek prompt care

Seek prompt medical review if the patch is rapidly extending, painful, ulcerated, or limiting movement. A patch near the eye needs attention if there is eyelid tightening, eye pain, redness, light sensitivity or a change in vision. New weakness, numbness or a severe headache also deserves urgent assessment rather than waiting for a routine skin appointment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the skin looks active or inactive, whether a biopsy would clarify the diagnosis, how close it is to the eye or deeper tissues, and which treatment is appropriate for the location. Ask how progress will be monitored and what change should prompt an earlier review.

Is facial morphea contagious?

No. Morphea is an inflammatory skin condition and does not spread through touch.

Can facial morphea affect the eye?

It can involve skin near the eye, so visual symptoms or eyelid tightening should be assessed promptly.
