Morgan spots on the skin: what to know

Red or skin-coloured bumps can arise when pores become blocked, when hair follicles become inflamed, or when shaving causes ingrown hairs. Acne can include blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed bumps, and deeper tender lesions. Folliculitis often centres on hair follicles and may itch or follow sweating, friction, or hair removal. Around the mouth, a fine rash can fit perioral dermatitis; facial flushing with persistent redness can occur with rosacea. Hormonal acne is one possible pattern when breakouts follow hormonal changes, but a spot does not by itself identify its cause.

Note whether the spots are itchy, painful, scaly, pus-filled, clustered around the mouth, linked to shaving, or leaving marks. That detail is more useful than an informal label.

Wash gently, avoid scrubbing and picking, and use non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen. Pause a newly introduced fragranced product if irritation began after using it. Clean shaving tools, shave with the grain, and reduce friction if bumps follow hair removal. Keep a simple record of triggers and cycle-related changes. If spots are persistent, painful, scarring, or spreading, arrange a dermatology review rather than layering several active products at once. LED light therapy may be discussed for selected acne concerns, but it is not a diagnosis or a substitute for examination.

Seek prompt advice for rapidly spreading redness, significant swelling, fever, severe pain, eye involvement, or draining lesions. Arrange assessment for deep nodules, repeated flares, sudden widespread bumps, or marks that continue to darken. New facial eruptions after a medicine or cosmetic procedure also merit review.
