What should you know about moderate sigmoid diverticulosis?

Moderate sigmoid diverticulosis means that several small pouches have formed in the sigmoid colon, often without inflammation. It is commonly found during a scan or bowel examination and may cause no symptoms. Diverticulosis is different from diverticulitis, in which a pouch becomes inflamed or infected.

The sigmoid colon is the lower, curved part of the large bowel. Pouches can develop where the bowel wall is naturally more vulnerable. A finding of diverticulosis does not by itself show that you have an active infection or explain every digestive symptom. Abdominal pain or constipation can have several causes, so the timing, location and pattern matter.

Aim for regular bowel movements with fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, increasing fibre gradually if your usual diet is low in it. Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fever, faintness, or blood in the stool.
