Moderate pulmonary hypertension: what to know

The lung arteries carry blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs. When resistance in these vessels rises, the heart must work harder to move blood through them. This can cause breathlessness during activity, fatigue, dizziness, chest discomfort or ankle swelling. Symptoms vary, and their severity does not identify the cause on its own.

Pulmonary hypertension can be linked with heart disease, chronic lung or kidney conditions, obstructive sleep apnoea, obesity or other disorders. Assessment may include oxygen checks, heart imaging, breathing tests, blood tests and specialist investigations to identify the type and guide treatment.

Keep appointments with your clinician and take prescribed treatment consistently. Record breathlessness, dizziness, chest symptoms, swelling and changes in activity tolerance. Ask before starting strenuous exercise, travelling to high altitude, becoming pregnant, or taking a new medicine, because the safest advice depends on the cause and your heart function.

Manage related conditions such as hypertension or sleep apnoea, avoid smoking, and ask about vaccinations and an activity plan. Do not stop pulmonary or heart medicines without medical advice.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness at rest, fainting, new severe chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, or sudden weakness. Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly increasing ankle swelling, a clear drop in exercise tolerance, new palpitations, or symptoms that are worsening despite treatment.
