What should you know about mobile gallstones?

Gallstones are hardened deposits formed from substances in bile. A stone may remain in the gallbladder without causing symptoms, but movement can briefly obstruct the outlet of the gallbladder or a bile duct. Gallstones commonly present with episodes of upper abdominal pain, often after eating, and some people also notice nausea, vomiting, bloating, or indigestion. These symptoms can have other causes, so they do not by themselves confirm gallstones.

A stone that reaches the common bile duct can interfere with bile flow and may lead to yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or pale stools. In some cases, a blockage can irritate the pancreas and cause pancreatitis. A clinician may use your symptom pattern, an examination, blood tests, and an ultrasound or other scan to understand what is happening.

Arrange a GP consultation if you have recurring pain beneath the right ribs or in the upper middle abdomen, especially when it lasts longer than a brief cramp or keeps returning. Keep a note of when the pain starts, how long it lasts, where it spreads, and whether meals, vomiting, fever, or changes in bowel movements occur. Until you are assessed, choose smaller meals if large or fatty meals seem to trigger symptoms, drink fluids as tolerated, and use only pain medicines that are suitable for you.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, pain that spreads to the back, repeated vomiting, fever or chills, or yellow skin or eyes. If you feel faint, confused, unusually weak, or unable to keep fluids down, seek emergency care promptly.
